A szeretet igazából nem érzés, hanem odaszánás és tett. Nem csupán az érzéseinken alapul. Bár kétségtelen, hogy az igazi szeretet érzésekkel is jár, az érzések még nem feltétlenül jeleznek igazi szeretetet. Az igazi odaszánás mindig tettekben nyilvánul meg - azaz igazi szeretetben.

Krisztus odaszánása arra is elég volt, hogy az életét adja értünk (Róma 5,8), még ha ez néha nem is volt kedvére (Máté 26,39).
